JOB SUMMARY:
This position is located in the Freer Gallery
of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. The
Galleries are devoted to the research, acquisition, exhibition, care,
and management of the collections of Asian art in each museum and
American art in the Freer Gallery. The incumbent serves as the Head of
the Conservation and Scientific Research Department providing program
and administrative leadership, management and direction to a staff of
conservators, conservation scientists, visiting conservators, research
scholars, and others involved in the conservation, analysis/scientific
examination of rare, valuable works of art or archaeological materials.

KEY REQUIREMENTS
DUTIES:
- Advises Director, curatorial staff and other gallery specialist on a broad range of work that involves determining the structural stability of an object, addressing problems of chemical and physical deterioration and performing corrective treatment.
- Oversees departmental research and conservation projects.
- Presents papers or lectures on topics in areas of expertise at conferences and symposia.
- Defines and interprets departmental goals, programs, and policies and establishes short-term and long-term goals for the administration of the department.
- Directly supervises employees carrying out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Experience: One year of full-time
experience at the GS-13 level that is close or similar to the work of
this job. The experience includes using treatment methods applicable to
the scientific examination, restoration and preservation of
archeological, historical and artistic objects of national value in a
museum or similar setting.
Qualification requirements must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date.
A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher. HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Your resume will be used to evaluate your experience, education, and/or training that address the competencies below:- Knowledge of conservation principles and techniques including effects of environmental factors, causes of damage and deterioration, and conservation treatments on museum objects and/or specimens.
- Ability to conduct research and analysis in conservation to produce accurate and professional documentation on conservation.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally at lectures, conferences, training activities, and other forums to professional audiences and the public.
- Ability to develop and direct a comprehensive conservation program for museum collections including environmental control, collections storage, and preservation requirements for exhibition and shipping.
- Ability to manage a conservation department and supervise its technical and professional staff and projects.
